BAY BRIDGE UPDATE:

From Friday June 2, 2006 at approximately 10:00 pm until Sunday June 4, 2006 at approximately 10:00 am, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge lower level will be closed to traffic because of increased activity of the retrofit. Eastbound traffic to the (Eastbay) will be closed to motorists completely until Sunday at approximately 10 AM.

From June 2 through June 5, 2006, (and possibly June 9-12) Caltrans will be closing 1st and Essex Street on-ramps for the entire weekend.  History has shown Caltrans that this creates major traffic delays on City streets and they are working feverishly to get this information out.

On Friday June 2nd at approximately midnight BART will begin running all-night service until approximately 10 AM on Sunday morning at which time BART will resume their regular Sunday service.

Westbound traffic into SF will be allowed on the Bridge over the weekend. Traffic from I-80 Westbound headed for 101 South will be taken off at Fremont Street and detoured to the 4th street on-ramp.  Motorists bound for the East Bay from San Francisco will have to take alternate bridges.

Timothy Leary died exactly 10 years ago today, on May 31, 1996.

Here's a nice selection of his writings, online:
http://www.erowid.org/culture/characters/leary_timothy/
And the WIKIpedia on Tim:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Leary

He was really just one of us, living a meaningful, full life...thriving in
exemplary ways... making his unique contributions to our
evolution...standing up when no one else would, telling stories along the
way: fantastic tales, modern parables, simple foibles, profound insights,
hilarious episodes...

Dr. Tim died on May 31, 1996. And on that day I would venture that the
backplane of our planetary mind, the spirit world if you will...was vastly
enriched with the new edge of human experience that Timothy's life so
powerfully embodied. He was a modern hero with whom millions resonated, and
whose mind and spirit opened many evolutionary pathways.

Tim was a friend and great inspiration to many. We remember and honor him as
the human journey continues! peace, Michael

#3 - Fri(6/02) - Sun(6/04)
   - International Educational and Strategy Conference
   - Embassy Suites Hotel Chicago-O'Hare Rosemont, Chicago, IL

With over 200 registered participants, we hope to leave en masse after
the press conference (1:00 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. at the Embassy Suites
Hotel, Rosemont, and got together via the El Train (Blue Linedowntown).

      Please join us!

Activists hope to reach Daley Plaza at by 3:30 p.m. for a brief
rally before beginning the March at 4:00 p.m. (Route details below).

Northern California 9-11 Truth Alliance has sent 400 posters,
Gary Franchi plans on turning 200 of them into picket signs. We have a
sound system, chant sheets, whistles, lots of Deception Dollars, and
handouts for the good people and press of Chicago. We hope that the
local peace and justice groups will join us and support the efforts to
stop the cover-up, expose the lies about 9/11 which have been used to
launch illegal wars, attack our Constitution, Bill of Rights, and sell
Homeland Security, an endless bogus war on terrorism. Any
"Impeachment," or "Don't Believe the Corporate Lies" signs would fit
in well with the theme of our march and conference which is to
challenge the official myths that support the War Paradigm and to
promote the truths and policies which support People and Peace. Bring
the kids, babies, musical instruments, your own message, songs, sense
of humor, courage, outrage, energy to let Chicago, the world know that
we aren't going to let the press, corporations, and government get
away with the lies and their dark agenda. We demand and will create a
better world for all.

Rally at Daley Plaza 3:30 p.m. and then walk north up Dearborn
to Randolph heading east, to State St. continuing north, stopping at
the ABC news new street studios located across the street from the
Chicago Theatre (
http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=stationinfo&id=4053703 ) then
on to NBC / Chicago Tribune / WGN Plaza, just north of the Chicago
River. We will stop at each studio and stand in front of their
windows, holding our signs and raising awareness. It is very important
to stay on the side walk and not block any exits or entrances to the
buildings in the area. We will let the media know who we are and what
we stand for. ROUTE MAP:

# "The Coming Media Monopoly: Concentration of Press Ownership and Its Effects on Democracy"
A panel discussion presented by the Society of Professional Journalists and Media Alliance
Thursday, June 1, at 7 p.m. - Reception at 6:30 p.m., refreshments and wine
Location: San Francisco LGBT Community Center, 1800 Market St. at Octavia, SF NorthWest Corner
IN SF most Even addresses are on the NORTH or WEST side of the street YO!
Admission: $5 (FREE for members of SPJ and Media Alliance)
---
The last year has seen dramatic shifts in Bay Area media ownership.

MediaNews, the new owner of the San Jose Mercury News and Contra Costa Times, will soon control nearly two-thirds of local daily newspaper circulation; the two largest weekly newspaper chains, Village Voice and New
Times, merged; and there's been an escalating scramble by several large media companies to control the expanding market for ethnic and foreign-language readers.

Can journalism survive in an era of corporate mergers and acquisitions? What about public service and community needs? What can be done in response to these trends to strengthen the quality of our news media workplaces?

Hear from journalists and media reformers who are responding creatively to the evolving media landscape.

Panelists:
-- LINDA FOLEY, president of The Newspaper Guild, a union representing newspaper workers nationwide. Prior to the sale of the Mercury News and Contra Costa Times, the Guild advanced an ambitious plan to transfer it and other former Knight Ridder papers to a "worker friendly" company.
-- TIM REDMOND, editor of the San Francisco Bay Guardian. The Guardian says it has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars due to unfair competition for ads since the two competing alt-weekly chains merged. How can the little guy compete when the "alternative" press is corporate controlled?
-- STEPHEN BUEL, editor of the East Bay Express. New owner Village Voice Media is the Guardian's corporate nemesis. As a reporter Buel once covered consolidation.
-- SANDY CLOSE, founder and director of New America Media, plus an additional panelist to be announced, will address the effects of consolidation in ethnic and foreign-language media.

Moderator:
-- ERNA SMITH, professor of journalism, San Francisco State University.

# raw vegan potluck Tuesday June 6th in Greer Park, Palo Alto. This
will start around 5:30pm and go until people go home or sunset.

You should bring the follow:
 - a raw vegan dish (main course and/or desert, etc.) and all required
   serving plate/utensiles for that dish.

 - plate/bowl/knife/fork/spoon/chopsticks/cut/etc to eat with.

 - something to drink (i.e. water, or maybe something to share).

 - a blanket (or chair) to sit on.

Greer Park has a picnic area with seats and tables, but best bring
something to sit on like a camp chair since space was a little
limited last time. I'm not sure how many people will show up,
maybe plan on your dish serving around 8 people.

Sounds good? Let me know if you can make it, or if you've got any
ideas for where to hold it. Feel free to email if you've got any
questions.

So let's meet at the picnic area at Greer Park. Directions to get
to Greer Park in Palo Alto from 101:
Take the OREGON EXPWY exit - go 0.6 mi
Turn left on W BAYSHORE RD - go 0.4 mi
Turn right on AMARILLO AVE - go 0.1 mi

The address for those printing maps is, 1098 Amarillo Ave. at West
Bayshore Road, Palo Alto.

Give that many of the people attending are coming from the south
(I think I'm the only person coming from the north), so moving to
a park farther south makes sense. But, I've not had a chance to
find a suitable park, so let stick with Greer for the next one.
If anybody can suggest another park, please let me know (maybe
around Mountain View?).

YAY, I'm looking forward to sharing more food with you people!
Take care, Ian.

# Borderline Digital SAT JUNE 3 6PM - LATE donation

clinical diagnosis of mental dependency on digital data
an audio/visual critique of civilization through digital technology
and an exploration of fragmentation, alienation, pixelation
JUNE 3rd, STATION40, 3030B 16st @MISSION

BORDERLINE DIGITAL
thinking of digital bits as a metaphor to the human experience. both
in our three dimensional reality, atoms banded together to create the
appearance of a smooth surface, but are indeed independent,
anomalous, and disorganized, and in our social networks promising
connectivity, communication and unity, yet through the cracks creeps
alienation, and our brains, corrupted and pixelated, are not so easy
to reboot.

here we are in the year 2006, and we have seen the future, we are
post modern and post futuristic, we are freakin' post post, we are
living in the days beyond the space odyssey.
The red eye of the soft spoken demented computer running the ship on
it's way to jupiter, is at best, a wet dream.
In reality, that voice, is nothing but an automatic answering
software running on a server farm in texas, telling us to please hold
on the line until our future is available...

Using the medium, the science and the technology itself, Borderline
Digital will tiptoe the fine line between the hype of digital
technology and the hypocrisy of primitivist deconstruction, to turn
technology inside out and point out it's vulnerabilities.

This would be a night long collective discussion, with prepared
materials and on the fly plugins, across multiple mediums and from
various angles, we will explore our relationship with digital
technology, and provide council where council is needed.

It sounds vauge you say... ? well, thats intentional. this event is
somewhere between an art show and a community forum. it's a rave at
an internet cafe and a videodrome in an elderly home. it can turn out
to be just some zombie geeks staring at the screen and throwing 3 LTR
acronims across the room, or it could be the video projector version
of an open mic night. it is whatever we all bring to it... so...
Bring your cellphones, your ipods, your laptops and gadgets, and most
importantly, bring your thoughts and your ideas to share. We will
either plug everything into a huge digital social network experiment
or make a big bonfire in the center of the room and try to name the
toxins for the different colored flames google free.

# Wednesday, June 7, 7:30 pm -- Estate Planning Workshop

Got a plan?
You may have seen the ads. They depict tragic scenarios -- mouths clogged
with peanut butter, cookies with nowhere to be dipped - truly, we are warned of
the horrors awaiting those with an inadequate dairy beverage supply.

Out here in the real world, though, there are more pressing issues. There are
questions that might need answers: Who will take care of your kids if you
can't? How can you protect the people you love? If you can't speak for yourself,
who will - and will they care what you think about it?

CSC is proud to present Estate Planning for Everyone, a seminar designed to
answer these and other questions about guardianship, wills, trusts, Advance
Health Care Directives and more. CSC board member Kathleen Hunt, Esq. is the
founder of Unique Law, a law practice serving unique individuals and their
families throughout the greater Bay Area. $15 individual/$25 household. At CSC, 398

# The Endangered Endangered Species Act
Thursday, June 8 7:30-9 pm Free

For over 30 years the Endangered Species Act has been our nation's
safety net for fish, wildlife, and plants on the brink of extinction.
But in 2005 the U.S. House of Representatives voted to gut the
protective provisions of the statute, and several bills to eviscerate
the Endangered Species Act are being proposed in the U.S. Senate. If
these bills become law the natural world is likely to become greatly
impoverished, and as one of the top biodiversity hotspots in the
country the San Francisco Bay Area has much to loose in the process.
Join Brent Plater, Bay Area Director for the Center for Biological
Diversity, as he describes the strength and importance of the
Endangered Species Act and how current legislation will weaken the
law, defines where real improvements in the Endangered Species Act
can be made, and explains what you can do to ensure that protections

# Ducky Doolittle 6/13!: June 13th / SAN FRANCISCO, CA
The Hot & Bothered Show
Entertaining and astute, Ducky's tales of sex-gone-wrong and sex-gone-right

goggles, balls, female ejaculation, weird things found in people's butts, the truth
about butt-gasms, outlawed sex toys, banned books and fear of sex education
in America. Combine all that and you get a hilarious and thought-provoking look
at today's twisted libido.

Bay Area Artists' Views of Peak Oil and Climate Change at

Art SF at 110 Capp Street, 5th Floor
 Saturday, June 17 from 7 to 10 P.M.

Scientists, environmentalists, financiers, world leaders, politicians and the U.N. have all spoken up and warned us to prepare for the advent of Peak Oil and Climate Change.

We've all seen the images of Katrina, the Indian Ocean, Europe's arctic winter, extreme floods and droughts on every continent and the flexings of powerful muscles over oil.

Now it is time for artists to step up to the plate. For centuries, the Art World has served not only as History's illustrator, but as society's conscience and a call to arms for its citizenry.

We are looking for serious/poignant/hopeful/tragic/personal/global views of the changes our planet and society shall be undergoing as the twin crises of peak oil and climate change overtake us.

While we are not necessarily looking for epic works of art (allowed, nevertheless), we do believe that these are two of the most serious issues facing humanity in the 21st Century. We are seeking the thoughtful works of Bay Area Artists that express this understanding.

The material in this show will be new to many and for some, a shock. It's tantamount to telling a child there is no Santa. We are not, however, looking for the merely sensational, but for informative, educational, emotional, and yes, humorous art. ( Not TOO black, please. We're talking about people's dreams and futures here.)

As many pieces as we have space for shall be included.

Gallery Bar, track lighting, sound system, wooden floor, tall window wall, large service elevator.

Set-up 7 - 10 P.M. Thursday, June 15 & Friday, June 16th. Ladder, Lights & Water available. Please provide your own fasteners and hammers, screwdrivers.

Publicity Art SF and San Francisco Oil Awareness have extensive mailing lists and shall be providing publicity throughout the Bay Area.

Definitely hold up / wait before blocking major intersections. BECAUSE
It would be nice to be visible to as many pedestrians and motorists as possible while
offending/ delaying as few motorists as possible.
Pissing them off is just gonna make them anti-bike.

July 2006

# July 2006 is the month to Bring the War Home to cities across the
nation with Direct Action and Civil Disobedience to shut down all metropolitan
areas. Then organizers from around the world will converge on DC August
10th through the 14th to confront the true war machine.

SHUT DOWN DC: August 10th through 14th, 2006. There will be massive
decentralized direct action against all government and corporate
entities.

The vast majority of government and corporate war profiteers are based
in DC, and its time they experience war first hand. Let's bring the war to
their homes, their offices, their parties and everywhere else they go.

As long as there is a war abroad, we must also have a war at home. With
the Iran war looming, the Iraq war lingering, and dozens of other wars
raging, it is long past time to bring the war home.

With thousands expected to descend on our fair city, mass housing, free
vegan food, and a convergence space will all be available. Mark your
calendars, tell your friends, plan to come to DC August 10th through
14th, 2006.

More information and details will be coming, and our website should be
up soon. Keep checking back for more details. In the meantime email

# July 15 - Day of Action against Climate Change and G8 - EF! Call to Action!
A call to action from Earth First! Climate Caucus and Rising Tide North America
July 15th 2006 -- Direct Action for Climate Justice

  International Day of Direct Action
against Climate Change and the G8
 Rise Up Against G8 Policies
Target Fossil Fuel Industries in Your Town or Bioregion

On July 15th, the "Group of 8" (G8) richest industrialized countries will gather in St. Petersburg, Russia to plot their continued commodification and domination of the planet, this time under the banner of "Energy Security." A leaked G8 "Communique on Energy Security" calls for trillions of dollars in new investments in oil, gas and coal production worldwide, plus wide-scale global expansion of nuclear energy. With runaway climate change* looming just over the horizon, such neoliberal business-as-usual poses a direct threat to the continuation of life on Earth as we know it. Resistance is self defense. The G8 agenda promotes petroleum-dependent "Energy Security" that pollutes our land and atmosphere, ravages poor and indigenous communities, and scorches the Earth's climate. Their recipe for disaster must be met with our global resistance!

July 15th will be an International Day of Action Against Climate Change. As G8 energy ministers promise trillions in new subsidies to the industries destroying our planet and our future, we will take action to shut them down! This is a call for autonomous, decentralized actions appropriate for your town, city, or bioregion. Use this international day of action to support local struggles against oil refineries, gas pipelines, strip mines and coal-fired power plants. Disrupt the financial backers of the fossil fuel industry. Host teach-ins to spread sustainable post-petroleum living skills. Find a weak point in the infrastructure of resource exploitation and throw a literal or symbolic wrench in the works. Visit your local polluters and give 'em hell!

The July 15th International Day of Action Against Climate Change is being mobilized by Rising Tide North America, a new network initiated in the US by the Earth First! Climate Caucus, with inspiration and support from the UK's vibrant Rising Tide direct action movement for climate justice and against climate change. Rising Tide North America is actively mobilizing July 15th actions in local bioregions, as well as reaching out to environmental justice, climate action and radical sustainability movements in all of the G8 countries plus the Global South.

Rising Tide North America is building a large collection of outreach and agit-prop materials that can be used by groups around the continent (and the world) to organize locally. These materials will be downloadable from http://www.reclaimthecommons.net and from the website of Rising Tide North America (comin' soon).

Join the Rising Tide North America network, and tell us about July 15th actions against climate change being planned in your community or bioregion! Contact us at efclimatecaucus@wildmail.com.

*19 of the 20 hottest years on record have occurred since 1980. Islands in the South Pacific are already evacuating due to rising sea levels. Storms and hurricanes are growing more severe. Polar bears are drowning as their icy habitat breaks apart and drifts out to sea. Greenland and Antarctica are melting. Everyday we spew more greenhouse gases burned from fossil fuels into the atmosphere; everyday we are one step closer to what scientists refer to as "the tipping point," on the verge of catastrophic and irreversible climate chaos.
